CAPITOL PARK MUSEUM
A LOUISIANA STATE MUSEUM
In 2026, the Capitol Park Museum celebrates 20 years of preserving, interpreting, and sharing Louisiana’s rich history and culture. For two decades, the Museum has served as a place where stories come alive—connecting generations, educating students, and welcoming communities from across the state and beyond.
The 20th Anniversary year is both a celebration and a moment of reflection. It honors the people, partnerships, and programs that have shaped the Museum while looking ahead to the future of storytelling, education, and access for all.
ABOUT CAPITOL PARK MUSEUM
Located at 660 North 4th Street in downtown Baton Rouge, Capitol Park Museum is a branch of the Louisiana State Museum and is the state system’s largest Museum - the only site to offer a panoramic exploration of Louisiana’s entire history, culture, and identity.
The museum opened to the public on February 1, 2006, and was designed by the New Orleans-based architecture firm Eskew+Dumez+Ripple. The building is approximately 69,000 square feet, situated on the Louisiana State Capitol grounds near the historic Louisiana State Capitol and gardens - positioned to connect visually and symbolically to the surrounding civic campus.
Inside, Capitol Park Museum features two major permanent exhibitions: Grounds for Greatness: Louisiana and the Nation and Experiencing Louisiana: Discovering the Soul of America. Together, these galleries highlight Louisiana’s influence on national history and the world, while also celebrating the distinctive cultural traditions that define life in Louisiana—through artifacts, multimedia, and immersive thematic storytelling.
In addition to rotating exhibits and public programs, the Museum’s collections and displays include significant historical objects tied to Louisiana’s political, military, and cultural past—supporting educational experiences for students, families, lifelong learners, and visitors from across the state.
